The establishment of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Mataram University, formally began in 1989 when Service and Assessment of Basic Sciences Unit (UPPID) was founded based on Mataram University Rector Decree No.136/PT21.H/H.01.12/1989 dated January 4, 1989. UPPID is specifically in charge of preparing the learning source and processof basic science in Mataram University. As the realization of the policy,Mataram University build basic laboratories (Biology Laboratory, Chemical Laboratory and Physical Laboratory) and also centralized all natural sciences practicums to be conducted in UPPID, especially for students of the Faculty of Agriculture,Teacher Training and Education, and Engineering which have natural science courses in their first year. Five years later (1994), the duty of UPPID is expanded, not only as a unit of research, but also as a unit for developing natural sciences under the Mataram University Rector Decree No. 7796/PT21.H/H.01.12/ 1994, dated August 31, 1994.
Since the workloads of PPID become increasingly heavier including includes natural science research conducted by both lecturers and students in University of Mataram, then Rector of Mataram University changed the status of UPPID into the Technical Service of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Unit (UPT-MIPA), based on Mataram University Rector Decree No.10933 / J18.H / HK.01.11 / 1996, dated November 8, 1996. The increasing duties of UPT MIPA also lead to the increase of the various parties’ involvement, such as lecturers, students, laboratory technicians and administrative personnel. Then, it is necessary to improve the organization to assure the fluency of tasks assigned. Therefore, according to Education Minister Decree No. 0181/0/1995, dated July 8, 1995, Rector of Mataram University considers that it is necessary to enhance the organization, which is realized by Decree of Rector of Mataram University regulating the organization and the administration in University of Mataram.
As the realization of the policy, Mataram University constantly works to improve the laboratory facilities coordinated by UPT MIPA, not only the basic laboratories used to support the practical activities of basic science, but also the development of research laboratories such as the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry and Laboratory of Immunology equipped with adequate facilities to support the research programs of the teaching staff. In addition, the number and qualifications of staff and technicians are continuously improved, both through postgraduate courses and training. This effort is intended as well as the preparation of the opening of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Mataram University.
According to the Directorate General of Higher Education Decree No. 2290 / PDT / 2001 dated July 4th 2001, Mataram University opened Department of Biology and began accepting students since the academic year 2002/2003. Then Department of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry were also opened in University of Mataram under the General of Higher Education Decree No. 1192 / DT / 2006, dated July 10, 2006. Since the academic year 2006/2007, the three study program had been started accepting new students, with the organizational structure is under the Rector of Mataram University. The condition of the organizational structure might lead to various obstacles, both in the implementation of teaching and learning, and also in the implementation of Tri Dharma PerguruanTinggi (Three Pillars of Tertiary Education) as a whole.
Therefore, on August 25, 2007, Rector of Mataram University dissolved UPT-MIPA by the Decree No. 10 578 / H18 / HK / 2007 and at the same time the Faculty of Mathematics and Basic Sciences was established by the Decree No. 10 147 / H18 / HK / 2007. The Faculty of Mathematics and Basic Sciences is formed consisting of four study programs, which are Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Biology. Improvement of the learning process quality is continously conducted by increasing the number of faculty staff, laboratory staff and teaching staff and also improving the competence of lecturers and professors by sending the lecturers for further studies. Improvement of facilities and infrastructure is also continuosly conducted by increasing laboratory equipment to support learning process and research.
In 2011, the four study programs in the Faculty of Mathematics and Basic Sciences, Mataram University, proposed the accreditation status to the National Accreditation Board of Higher Education. Based on the portfolio assessment and visitation to assess the academic management processes, learning processes and facilities / infrastructure of education, the programs of biology, physics, chemistry and mathematics obtain accreditation status B.
Along with the development of the Faculty of Mathematics and Basic Sciences as well as the demands of bachelor’s in Pharmacy and Pharmacist in West Nusa Tenggara Province.the Faculty of Mathematics and Basic Sciences has been opened and accepting students of Pharmacy since the academic year 2014/2015. The implementation plan of Program of Pharmacy has been conducted since 2008 by preparing fboth lecturers and laboratory, as well as laboratory facilities and infrastructure. After graduating undergraduate of Pharmacy Program, the Faculty of Mathematics and Basic Sciences will conduct profession program of Pharmacy with Program of Pharmacy as an organizer.
In 2020, the Faculty of Mathematics and Basic Sciences of Mataram University will become Mathematics and Basic Sciences Research Center in Eastern Region of Indonesia (KTI) based on local natural resources.
To achieve the vision , the Faculty of Mathematics and Basic Sciences of Mataram University have missions which are in line with the function of higher education Tri Dharma including mission of education, research and community service by organizing:
- Qualified mathematics and basic sciences education in a professional manner and in line with the sustainable development of science and technology in order to produce graduates who master the solid basic sciences and are highly competitive to support the development of science and innovative technology based on local resources.
