news-pusat-bahasaUniversity of Mataram was lucky to have special guests from USC Australia — Dr. Philip Mahnken (lecturer of Bahasa Indonesia) and Ms. Annie Robertson (expert on CLIL, Language Education and Assessment). Their presence to UNRAM was to discuss possible further networking, in addition to in-country Bahasa Indonesia, on research on language education especially English and Indonesian. From discussion between Pusat Bahasa and USC, there are several potential research to be conducted in collaboration. In relation to teaching Bahasa Indonesia for Foreigners (TIFL/BIPA), Pusat Bahasa UNRAM under DIKTI funding, has initiated to conduct research on Curriculum and Syllabus Design using Theme-Based Approach and potential to be extended to Lesson Plan and Teaching Materials (Text Books) (proposal has been submitted and reviewed). To continue this research, Pusat Bahasa and USC team can extend the current study into research on assessment (pre-test, achievement test or proficiency test for Bahasa Indonesia), IT-based learning materials, teaching and learning media (audio visual and audio-lingual). The research can also be extended to various issues in ELT including teaching ESP using CLIL Approach.

news-pusat-bahasa2In her time in Lombok, Ms. Ann Robertson also voluntarily gave series of workshops on Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) to teachers, teacher training students at University of Mataram in three different places. CLIL is a dual focused educational approach in which an additional language is used for teaching and learning of both content and language (Mehisto, Marsh, Frigols, 2008). This approach can be applied into two versions – the strong or content driven approach and the weak approach or language-driven approach. The underlying principles of the application of the cross-curricular teaching like CLIL are based on Coyle’s 4Cs curriculum, stating that a successful lesson should combine such elements as Content, Communication, Cognition and Culture. The lesson in this approach often follows a four-stage framework: Processing the text, Identification and organization of knowledge, Language identification, and Tasks for students. How CLIL is applied in class was the topic of workshop presented by Ms. Annie Robertson accompanied by her senior collage Dr. Philip Mahnken. (Detail artikel..)
