From Eastern Indonesia, Chris’ Spirit Inspires PKKMB Unram

Mataram, University of Mataram – In the spirit of the Introduction to Campus Life for New Students (PKKMB), one participant caught everyone’s attention with his unique journey. Christian Ellmy Siangsaleh Imbiri, known as Chris, travelled all the way from South Manokwari, West Papua, to pursue his education in the Law Department at the Faculty of Law, Social Sciences, and Political Sciences, University of Mataram (FHISIP Unram).

Chris chose Unram for good reason. Besides being drawn to Lombok’s natural beauty and tourist attractions, he also saw a great opportunity through the affirmative action scholarship programme he applied for.

“Not many affirmative action scholarship recipients know about Unram. I think the chances of getting in are high. Plus, I want to introduce Unram to my friends so more of them apply next year,” he said enthusiastically.

When he arrived in Lombok, Chris was initially surprised by the faster-paced traffic compared to his hometown. However, the atmosphere quickly changed once the PKKMB began.

“During the PKKMB, the most memorable part for me was feeling lonely at first, but by the start of the PKKMB, I didn’t feel as lonely anymore because I made many new friends—all of whom are kind, of course. And that made me happy to be here,” he said.

Social adaptation was indeed a challenge for Chris. However, with strong determination, he is ready to learn, grow, and pursue his dream of becoming a police officer with a Bachelor of Law degree.

“My hope is that I can complete my education at Unram on time so I can join the police force with a Bachelor of Law degree,” he added.

He also has an important message for friends from Papua who want to study outside their region: “Don’t bring your habits from Papua to someone else’s place, because different places have different cultures and customs. What’s most important is to respect the differences because we’re all one, just different races.”

Chris is a real example of the spirit of unity in diversity. His story adds a unique touch to Unram’s journey in shaping outstanding generations from all corners of Indonesia.
