Unram and Universitas Hamzanwadi Strengthen Academic Synergy to Address Medical Doctor Shortage in West Nusa Tenggara

Mataram, University of Mataram — As part of efforts to strengthen synergy, particularly within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Rector of the University of Mataram (Unram), Prof. Dr. Sukardi, M.Pd., welcomed the visit of Rector of Hamzanwadi University, Dr. Ir. Hj. Sitti Rohmi Djalilah, on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the Rector’s Guest Room, Unram Rectorate. This meeting served as an important momentum to deepen relations between the two universities while discussing strategic cooperation to meet and ensure the equitable distribution of medical doctors across West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

Rector of Hamzanwadi University, Dr. Ir. Hj. Sitti Rohmi Djalilah, underscored the importance of renewing cooperation between Hamzanwadi’s Faculty of Medicine and Unram’s Faculty of Medicine. “We hope this collaboration will be more strategic and deliver tangible benefits for the people of NTB,” she affirmed.

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Hamzanwadi University further detailed a concrete mechanism for student admissions as part of the partnership. “If prospective students achieve Unram’s passing grade but the Faculty of Medicine quota at Unram has already been filled, they may be directly admitted to Hamzanwadi’s Faculty of Medicine without the need for a repeat test,” he emphasized.

Responding to the proposal, Rector of Unram, Prof. Dr. Sukardi, M.Pd., reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening cooperation with Hamzanwadi University across a range of strategic areas. “We will reinforce our cooperation agreements, for example with hospitals, clinics, and faculties of medicine, including in research. Most importantly, the most detailed collaboration will be within the Faculty of Medicine. Results from Unram’s Mandiri entrance examination can later be used by Hamzanwadi University as the basis for admitting new students, eliminating the need for a repeat test. Other forms of cooperation will, of course, be aligned with central directives and policies. As a state university, all Unram facilities are funded by the government. Therefore, we make this campus inclusive, so anyone at any time is welcome to come to Unram to use or borrow the facilities available,” he emphasized.

Prof. Dr. Sukardi, M.Pd., also highlighted the challenge of limited interest in specialist medical education (PPDS) due to relatively high costs. He expressed hope that cooperation with Hamzanwadi University would help broaden access for prospective specialist doctors.

This meeting demonstrated the concrete commitment of both universities to addressing the pressing issue of equitable distribution of medical personnel in NTB. The synergy established is expected to expand access for prospective students, strengthen research collaboration, and enhance the quality of healthcare services for the community.
