Mataram, University of Mataram — The University of Mataram (Unram) successfully held an Entrepreneurship Public Lecture themed “From Ideas to Action, From Action to Real Impact for an Advanced Indonesia.” The event featured one of Indonesia’s leading business figures, Anindya Bakrie, Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN), who delivered the keynote lecture on “Entrepreneurship and Indonesian Leadership in a Changing World.”

The public lecture took place on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, in the Unram Senate Meeting Hall and was attended by the Rector of Unram, the Chairman of KADIN Indonesia and his delegation, the Chairman of KADIN West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Unram’s Vice Rectors, members of the university community, as well as students, lecturers, and members of the public.

Through this forum, Unram encouraged its academic community to transform the mindset of young people from becoming merely job seekers into job creators capable of generating meaningful and lasting impacts on society.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Dr. Sukardi, M.Pd., Rector of Unram, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to strengthening its position as a higher education institution that is excellent, impactful, and globally competitive. He emphasized that the true measure of a university’s competitiveness lies in the quality of its graduates and their tangible contributions to society.

“Most university graduates still aspire to become employees or civil servants, whereas developed countries are supported by a high proportion of entrepreneurs. We want Unram graduates to become not only job seekers but also job creators,” he said.

To realize this vision, Unram has introduced several transformative academic initiatives, including Project- and Industry-Based Learning, which shifts conventional classroom instruction toward project-based learning, experiential learning, and direct industry problem-solving. The university has also launched a Startup Mini Grant Program, providing dedicated funding to nurture and finance students’ business ideas so they can develop into sustainable enterprises.

Prof. Sukardi also highlighted Unram’s commitment to educational inclusivity by ensuring access to quality higher education for students from all backgrounds, including financial assistance for high-achieving students from economically disadvantaged families.

During the keynote session, Anindya Bakrie expressed his optimism about the future of Indonesia and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). Addressing the students, he stressed that entrepreneurial success is not determined solely by the amount of initial capital.

“Don’t assume that a startup or a new business must begin with substantial capital. It can start with virtually no financial resources—just an idea, courage, determination, and a strong network. There is no successful entrepreneur who has never experienced failure. The key is to build resilience and always be ready to rise after setbacks,” he said.

Responding to the rapid pace of global change, Anindya shared a practical framework for entrepreneurship and leadership built on several key principles. The first is Character—developing mental resilience, honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic. According to him, these qualities form the foundation for managing risks and overcoming business failures.

He also emphasized the importance of Curiosity—maintaining a lifelong commitment to learning, particularly by leveraging emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive business innovation. In addition, he encouraged students to apply the well-known entrepreneurial principle of Observe, Imitate, and Modify (ATM) while consistently upholding discipline and strong ethical values.

The public lecture concluded with an interactive discussion session that was met with great enthusiasm from the participants. Through this collaboration between academia and industry practitioners, Unram hopes to cultivate a new generation of resilient, innovative entrepreneurs who are ready to make meaningful contributions to Indonesia’s economic development and the realization of an Advanced Indonesia (Indonesia Maju).
