Unram Trains Lecturers and Staff in Sign Language, Preparing an Inclusive Campus for People with Disabilities

Mataram, University of Mataram – University of Mataram (Unram) shows its commitment to be an inclusive campus by preparing sign language training for lecturers and education staff. This action aims to support students with disabilities, especially the deaf, who have started studying at Unram.
“Starting this May, we are holding sign language training facilitated by professional trainers from Jakarta. The training is gradual up to four levels so that lecturers and staff are really proficient in using sign language,” said Unram’s Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Sitti Hilyana, M.Si.
The training is not only open to active lecturers and education personnel, but also to alumni, in order to open up new career opportunities in various sectors that now require expertise in sign language.
The training will be held at the Unram Library Building, with a four-level training scheme. Each level lasts for 3.5 months, so that participants get enough learning time to master the skills of using sign language gradually and in depth.
In addition, Unram also continues to complete disability-friendly infrastructure, such as wheelchair lanes, elevators, and special bathrooms in various faculties.
“Infrastructure is not enough, human resources must also be ready. We want that during the teaching and learning process, students with disabilities receive maximum services, including sign language interpreters in class,” she added.
Prof. Nana explained that this effort is part of Unram’s big vision to become a pioneer in building a disability-friendly campus in Indonesia. Not only focusing on physical access, but also on access to communication and academic services that are equal for all students, without discrimination.
With this training and facility improvement, Unram hopes to become a pioneer of disability-friendly campuses in Indonesia, providing equal learning opportunities for all students.
