Unram and BRIN Forge Strategic Collaboration to Strengthen National Research

Mataram, University of Mataram – The University of Mataram (Unram) reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the national research ecosystem through strategic collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The meeting, held at the Rectorate Meeting Room on Thursday (September 11), provided an open forum for discussing issues, challenges, and opportunities in Indonesia’s research and innovation landscape.
Unram’s Rector, Prof. Ir. Bambang Hari Kusumo, M.Agr.St., Ph.D., emphasized that research at Unram is driven by tangible societal impact. “We do not want research to merely serve as a formality for academic promotion or a publication requirement. Research at Unram must be present in society, connected with industry, and generate real impact,” he asserted.
Prof. Bambang also highlighted several significant achievements that Unram has accomplished, noting that these serve as a solid foundation for expanding research networks with various strategic partners. “Despite limited funding, we consistently direct Unram’s research efforts to deliver the greatest possible benefits. This is the tangible embodiment of Unram’s role as an Impactful University,” he remarked.
On the same occasion, the Director of Research, Technology, and Innovation Measurement and Indicators at BRIN, Khairul Rizal, Ph.D., outlined the direction of strengthening the national research ecosystem currently being developed in collaboration with the international Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI). The master plan emphasizes six key priorities: food, energy, and health sovereignty; the transition toward a knowledge-based economy; sustainable environmental development; and the reinforcement of social and community resilience.
Khairul also emphasized several challenges that need to be addressed. “In terms of publications, we are leading in ASEAN, but the citation rate per publication still needs improvement. In addition, industry participation in research remains relatively low,” he explained.
The meeting aimed to map out issues related to governance, infrastructure, and research funding; to gather input for refining the national research ecosystem; and to strengthen synergy between the central government and universities.
Through this collaboration, Unram and BRIN are not only building research networks but also reaffirming the role of Indonesian research as a driving force for innovation and national development.
