Mataram, University of Mataram — Who would have thought that brown algae, underestimated for its potential, could be transformed into a body lotion with significant benefits and high economic value? This is the innovation brought by the Radiant Sea Team from the University of Mataram (Unram) to the stage of the 16th Indonesian Student Entrepreneurship (KMI) Expo 2025, presenting a unique blend of marine potential and skincare innovation. The prestigious national event takes place on 17–22 November 2025 at Universitas Tidar, Sidotopo Campus, Magelang, Central Java.

Radiant Sea was initiated by Dwi Safitri as the team leader, together with members Murniati, Putri Sahrani, and Zulfana Putri, students of the Marine Science Study Program at the Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Mataram. Carrying a proposal titled “Radiant Sea: Body Lotion Innovation from Padina sp Seaweed Extract to Keep Skin Healthy, Hydrated, and Nourished,” this business unit competes in the manufacturing and applied technology category at the growing-stage level, under the guidance of Chandrika Eka Larasati, S.Pi., M.Si.

Radiant Sea utilizes Padina sp., a brown alga often considered low-value, and transforms it into a high-value active ingredient in its body lotion formulation. The natural antioxidants found in Padina provide moisturizing, nourishing, and protective benefits against environmental pollution.

“Our main highlight is the use of Padina sp. as a high-value base ingredient. Beyond its rich skincare benefits, this innovation also addresses environmental concerns by turning an often-discarded alga into a valuable product,” said Dwi Safitri.

With high hopes of delivering their best performance at the KMI Expo, the Radiant Sea team has been refining every aspect of their preparation from perfecting the product’s packaging size and design, strengthening the brand identity, to finalizing the presentation materials they will deliver before the panel of judges. Intensive pitching practices have been carried out alongside the arrangement of an informative and visually appealing booth display to ensure their product innovation is showcased effectively.

“We want to make sure that the character and uniqueness of Radiant Sea are clearly visible to both the judges and visitors,” said Dwi.

The Radiant Sea team is also bringing high hopes and ambitious targets to their participation this year. In addition to aiming for achievements in the Manufacturing and Applied Technology category, the team views the KMI Expo as a strategic platform to introduce their product and expand their professional network. Through an interactive booth featuring testers, product demonstrations, and educational materials on the benefits of Padina sp., the team is building public interest while opening opportunities for collaboration with fellow participants, judges, investors, and various industry stakeholders.

The KMI Expo also serves as a valuable learning platform, enabling the team to absorb insights from other participants’ innovations and gain meaningful feedback for future product development and business direction.

With a relevant innovation and a concept grounded in sustainability, Radiant Sea demonstrates how local resources can be transformed into environmentally friendly solutions that benefit the community. The participation of the Radiant Sea Team in KMI Expo XVI 2025 reflects Unram’s commitment not only to fostering innovation but also to cultivating a new generation of young entrepreneurs who think sustainably and create meaningful impact for society.
