Communication Science Student from FHISIP Unram Wins 1st Place in Scientific Writing Competition in Palembang

Mataram, University of Mataram – Students from the Communication Science Study Programme, Faculty of Law, Social Sciences, and Political Science (FHISIP) at the University of Mataram (Unram) have once again made a proud achievement on the national stage. Shafwatu Qalbiy, a student from Central Lombok, won first place in the National Scientific Writing Competition organised by the Sociology Student Association (HIMASOS), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at Sriwijaya University, Palembang. Second and third place were claimed by students from Gadjah Mada University and Padang State University.
The prestigious competition, which took place from 12 to 15 November 2025, was attended by students from various universities in the country, with the five best finalist teams, namely teams from University of Mataram, Gadjah Mada University, Padang State University, Sriwijaya University and Mitra Industri Polytechnic, competing for first place. The Unram team consisted of three members: Shafwatu Qalbiy (Communication Sciences), Paenal Juni Harian (Sociology Education), and Khairul Nur Hazami (Sociology).
Shafwatu Qalbiy performed brilliantly with her scientific work, which was considered superior in terms of the novelty of ideas, sharpness of analysis, and relevance of research to contemporary social issues. Her paper, entitled “Awig-awig Pernikahan Desa Sengkerang sebagai Bentuk Perlawanan Simbolik Kaum Subaltern terhadap Polarisasi Gender” (Awig-awig Marriage in Sengkerang Village as a Form of Symbolic Resistance of the Subaltern Class against Gender Polarisation), was considered superior to the works of other participants.
“This achievement is not only a personal pride, but also brings good name to University of Mataram, especially the Communication Studies Programme,” said Shafwatu.
This achievement also strengthens the position of the Communication Studies Programme at FHISIP Unram as a leading programme in Mataram. Its students have once again been able to compete and defeat students from other universities that also have great reputations.
“May this achievement inspire myself and other students to continue excelling and bringing honour to the university in various national and international events,” concluded Shafwatu.
