Mataram, University of Mataram – Students of the Elementary Teacher Education Study Program (PGSD), Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Mataram (FKIP Unram) who are members of the Teaching Assistance program successfully held an outing class with the theme of sorting waste on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at State Elementary School 24 Mataram. This activity was held as a form of real implementation of contextual learning while simultaneously instilling the value of environmental awareness from an early age to elementary school students.

By emphasizing the spirit of impactful campus, this outing class was held in the partner school environment where students conduct teaching assistance. This activity was enthusiastically followed by students who were invited to learn directly about waste types, how to sort them, and the positive and negative impacts of the waste sorting habit.

The activity started with a briefing about the purpose of the outing class, the agenda of the activity, and the rules that must be obeyed during the out-of-class activity. Students then delivered interactive educational material about sorting organic, inorganic, and hazardous waste, accompanied by real examples from the environment around the school.

After the material was delivered, students were divided into small groups and guided to do hands-on practice of sorting waste into bins that had been provided at several collection points. The activity continued with a craft creation session from the sorted waste, where students attached pieces of paper and other used materials according to the waste category to the prepared image media.

According to Dr. Prayogi Dwina Angga, S.Or., M.Pd., as the field supervisor, this activity has a high educational value and is relevant to current environmental issues.

“Outing class like this is proof that education does not always have to be in the classroom. Students are able to invite children to learn through real experiences, and more than that, they instill environmental awareness from an early age,” he said.

“This is a tangible form of impactful campus, where students not only learn, but also make positive contributions to schools and communities,” added Dr. Prayogi.

This outing class program is part of an effort to strengthen collaboration between campus and school in building a generation that is not only academically smart, but also cares about environmental sustainability. It is hoped that the children will be able to continue the good habit of sorting waste into their lives, and become agents of change in their families and communities.
