Unram and BRIN Collaborate to Develop Marine Potential, Focus on Empowering Coastal Women in NTB
Mataram, University of Mataram- University of Mataram (Unram) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at the West Nusa Tenggara Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda NTB) Office. This collaboration opens up great opportunities in research and development in the marine and fisheries sector, especially in the NTB region.
Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of Unram, Prof. Dr. Sitti Hilyana, M.Si. explained that this collaboration will include comprehensive research in the marine sector, especially related to the potential of seaweed and salt.
“First, in the near future, we will prepare work programs that will be conducted together between BRIN and Unram, starting from remapping the potential of seaweed and salt development. Then proceed with research on the downstreaming of seaweed products and also the empowerment of coastal communities in order to increase the added value of seaweed and salt,” she said.
BRIN is committed to providing funding, while Unram will support through the provision of supporting systems and experts to realize this program. This cooperation will certainly be expanded by involving local governments, including the Bappeda of NTB, the Department of Industry, the Department of Marine and Fisheries, the Department of UKM Cooperatives, and Trade of NTB Province, down to the district level. The focus of seaweed development is in 10 strategic locations, so it will involve the district government.
“The fostered UMKM relating to the processing of fishery products, especially seaweed and salt, have begun to be identified and mapped. All that remains is to continue in the form of capacity building for coastal communities, especially women in coastal areas,” Prof. Nana added.
This collaboration is expected to support the development of a research-based marine industry and have a positive impact on the welfare of coastal communities in NTB.
