Workshop and Guest Lecture of Architecture Study Program Explores Mataram’s Urban Vitality

Mataram, University of Mataram – The Architecture Study Program of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Mataram (FT Unram) held a Workshop and Guest Lecture entitled “Urban Appraisal on Architecture and Street Denoting Urban Vitality in Mataram: Placemaking and Placeness” on Monday, September 2, 2024 to Tuesday, September 3, 2024. The event took place in Prof. Morisco Room, 3rd Floor of A Building Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Studio Room.

The event presented numerous international resource persons from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) who are experts in the field of architecture and landscape architecture, including:

  2. Dr. Janatun Naim Binti Yusof (Department of Landscape Architecture, UTM)
  3. LAR. CA. TS. Dr. Nurzuliza Binti Jamirsah (Department of Landscape Architecture, UTM)
  4. Dr. Rohana Binti Firdaus (Flexible Academic Scheme (SAF), UTM)
  5. Ts. Dr. Mohammad Ezzad bin Abu Bakar (Department of Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying, UTM)
  6. Dr. Tengku Intan Suraya Binti Tengku Aziz (Department of Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying, UTM)

The first day of the event was opened by the Dean of FT Unram who gave a speech and officially inaugurated this event. After the opening, participants had a group photo session, then continued with the presentation of material in the Architecture Studio Room by the resource persons to the students.

After the presentation of the material, the students were divided into 10 groups and conducted field surveys to several environments in the city of Mataram, such as Dasan Agung, Kekalik, Teras Udayana, and Sangkareang.

The second day of the event began with a discussion of the survey results that had been conducted by the students. This discussion focused on the application of the survey results into a drawing design using baking paper. Students were given the opportunity to explore and develop their design ideas based on the findings from the field survey.

After the discussion session, students presented their designs to all participants and resource persons. This presentation aims to gain feedback and further discussion on how the concepts learned can be applied in a broader context.

The event was closed with a group photo session as a memento. Shawls and plaques were then handed over to the speakers as a form of appreciation for their contribution to this event. The handover ceremony was led by the Head of Unram Architecture Study Program.

This workshop is expected to provide new insights for students regarding the importance of the role of architecture in creating vibrant and useful public spaces, as well as enriching the learning experience through interaction with international experts.
