Training on Realizing Inclusive Classroom Implementation of Universal Design for Learning at Unram

Mataram, University of Mataram – The University of Indonesia (UI) and the University of Mataram (Unram) in collaboration with the Teacher and Student Effectiveness Research Group held a Training on Realizing Inclusive Classes with the topic “Implementation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) at the University of Mataram” which took place on November 4-5, 2024. The event was held at the 4th Floor Pharmacy Building, Unram and was attended by representatives from all study programs at Unram.

This training aims to increase lecturers’ understanding in practicing UDL as a guide for lecturers in teaching inclusive classes. The training was guided by two expert facilitators, Fadlun N, M.Psi., Psychologist and Annisa AN, M.Psi., Psychologist, who provided practical and inspiring guidance during the session.

The training was officially opened by the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs of Unram, Prof. Dr. Sitti Hilyana, who conveyed the importance of higher education to create a learning environment that is accessible to all students, without exception.

In her speech, Prof. Dr. Sitti Hilyana said, “ University of Mataram is committed that all parties have the same right to education. The University of Mataram is also increasing the number of students from people with disabilities, as evidenced by around 76% in several study programs that have provided opportunities for students with disabilities to join the University of Mataram. And in the future we will increase the practice of socializing new student admissions from all paths, we open opportunities for socialization in special schools, so that information for our friends with special needs is open”.

In her remarks, the Chief Researcher, Prof. Farida Kurniawati, M.Sp.Ed., Ph.D., Psychologist explained, “All individuals have the same opportunity to be educated including in higher education. But we often forget about special education, for that we are here with colleagues to discuss this training. And maybe we can keep working together not only apart from here”.

This training lasts for two days with various sessions, ranging from introductory training, reflection on the game “Bingo,” to direct practice of UDL application in the learning process. Some of the topics that will be discussed include “Practice of UDL: Multiple Means of Engagement”, ‘Redesign Assessment’, and ”Research Lesson Planning.”

With the implementation of this training, it is expected to encourage more lecturers at Unram to be able to apply UDL in their classes. This effort is in line with Unram’s commitment in realizing quality and inclusive higher education.
