Mataram, University of Mataram – The Research and Community Service Institute of the University of Mataram (LPPM Unram) together with the City Government of Bima held a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing activity in the context of the placement of Real Work Study (KKN) Students for Village Community Empowerment (PMD) for the July-August 2024 Period. This activity took place in the LPPM Unram Head Conference Room on Wednesday (5/6).

Universities are obliged to organize the Tridharma of Higher Education, consisting of education, research, and community service as stated in Law No. 12/2012 on Higher Education. Community service is an academic activity that utilizes science and technology to advance the welfare of society and educate the nation’s life. KKN is one form of community service implementation in the Tridharma of Higher Education. The implementation of community service is conducted in accordance with the academic culture, expertise, and/or scientific autonomy of the academic community as well as the socio-cultural conditions of the community. Some universities carry out KKN regularly as a mandatory student activity.

KKN-PMD is an intracurricular activity that combines the implementation of the Tridharma of Higher Education with the method of providing knowledge and work experience to students in planning, implementing and supervising village development activities.

On this occasion, the Head of the Bima City SETDA Government Section, Ahsanurrahman, S.H., M.H.; Head of LPPM Unram, Prof. Dr. Ir. Sukartono, M.Agr.; accompanied by the Head of KKN and Cooperation Center, Dr. Ir. Misbahuddin, ST., MT., IPU.; and Prof. Ir. Buan Anshari, M.Sc.(Eng.), Ph.D. were present.

Ahsanurrahman, S.H., M.H. said, “ The Government of Bima City really welcomes this collaboration, it aims to further enrich the knowledge and insights of KKN students, especially students from other districts/cities placed in the City of Bima.”

In line with this, the Head of LPPM Unram, Prof. Dr. Ir. Sukartono, M.Agr. explained, “In this period we initiated KKN-PMD cooperation with the City Government of Bima where there are 40 students spread across 8 villages accompanied by 8 Field Supervisors.”

“The implementation of KKN-PMD is one of the commitments of the University of Mataram to play an active role in village development efforts, especially in the City of Bima, by analyzing potential and problems to be solved through a scientific approach. Thus village development means that the village has independence in developing itself (self development), “said Prof. Sukartono.

The prioritization of KKN work programs in the context of KKN-PMD Unram is inseparable from the village development paradigm as mandated in the law. In the perspective of village development, villages are seen as a combination of strong village community entities and strong village governments. Therefore, the active role of the community in the entire development process is very important. Through the KKN-PMD approach, it is hoped that the mainstreaming of the KKN-PMD work program will provide ample space for students and in particular local villagers to play an active role in developing and managing their own villages.
