Prof. Bambang Drives Unram’s Transformation Toward Global Competitiveness

Mataram, University of Mataram – Since 2022, the University of Mataram (Unram) has shown remarkable acceleration in various areas, ranging from improvements in national rankings and an increase in the number of professors to the growing presence of international students. This acceleration affirms Unram’s strides toward becoming a globally competitive university under the leadership of Rector Prof. Ir. Bambang Hari Kusumo, M.Agr.St., Ph.D.
Beyond six decades of existence, Unram has become increasingly mature. Prof. Bambang’s grand vision of turning Unram into a world-class university is no longer just a slogan, but has been realized through improved governance, accelerated academic programs, and institutional strengthening as the tangible direction of campus transformation.
A number of concrete steps have been taken through the establishment of acceleration units, such as the Acceleration Unit for Independent Learning–Independent Campus (MBKM) and Main Performance Indicators (IKU), the Acceleration Units for Accreditation, the Acceleration Unit for PTN-BH Transition, and the Acceleration Unit for World-Class University Development. The results are evident, Unram’s budget absorption now ranks among the top three nationally among state universities with Public Service Agency (BLU) status. The university’s ranking and reputation have also continued to improve.
“In the past three years, Unram’s position in various rankings has risen significantly. According to Webometrics data, Unram’s national ranking improved from 52nd in early 2022 to 48th in early 2025,” said Unram’s Head of Public Relations, Dr. Khairul Umam, S.H., M.H.
The highlight came in 2023 when Unram successfully entered the Top 20 best universities in Indonesia according to the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, a remarkable achievement that reflects the university’s strong commitment to sustainability and innovation.
In addition, in 2022, Unram only had three superior accreditations. By 2025, this number has increased sharply to a total of no less than 32 superior accreditations. Unram as an institution also holds superior accreditation with three internationally accredited study programs.
One indicator of Unram’s progress is the increasing number of international students each year. In 2021, the number was still relatively small, then increased to 57 in 2022. The following year, it jumped to 143 students, then increased again to around 275 in 2024. Entering 2025, the number of foreign students at Unram has reached nearly 300.
“Students from various countries are now part of the campus dynamic, in line with the increase in exchange programs and cross-border academic cooperation. Unram is actively expanding its network of cooperation with various educational and research institutions, both domestic and overseas. Research collaboration programs, student exchanges, and the implementation of MBKM are proof of our commitment to be open to global collaboration,” explained Khairul Umam.
Over the past five years, Unram has consistently achieved an Unqualified Opinion (WTP) from the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), obtained an A predicate for its Government Agency Performance and Accountability Report (LKjIP), which was previously only a C predicate, and achieved an Informative predicate as the highest category in public information disclosure. At the same time, there has been a significant acceleration in the strengthening of human resources, with the number of professors increasing sharply from around 62 in 2021 to more than 143 in 2025. This has further strengthened the research capacity and teaching quality of Unram’s nine faculties and 68 study programs, while also opening up more space for innovations that have an impact on society.
In terms of infrastructure, the Unram campus now has become much more comfortable, neat, and green. A number of strategic developments have been successfully completed, including the completion of a hospital that had previously been unfinished, the construction of two new FKIK and FHISIP buildings along with clinics, and the construction of a Learning Center funded through SBSN, which began this year. The campus area has also been completely reorganized, from landscape improvements and greening to the construction of a fully-equipped sports center.
In line with the strengthening of infrastructure, Unram also continues to build learning facilities and applied research centers, which contribute to improving student achievement at the national and international levels. At the same time, more than 800 Unram employees have been appointed as PPPK civil servants, while campus management is now more modern, effective, and accountable.
