Unram Fully Supports People with Disabilities, Facilitates Sign Language Training

Mataram, University of Mataram – On Tuesday, March 18, 2025, University of Mataram (Unram) received a visit from the Center for Indonesian Sign Language (PUSBISINDO) West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This shows Unram’s commitment in supporting inclusivity for people with disabilities. One of the concrete steps taken is to facilitate PUSBISINDO NTB in organizing sign language training for the Unram academic community, located at the Mandarin Center, Unram Library.
Vice Rector 1 for Academic Affairs, Prof. Dr. Ir. Siti Hilyana, emphasized that Unram fully supports efforts to create a friendly academic environment for people with disabilities. “ The University of Mataram in this case fully supports to help people with disabilities,” she said.
Furthermore, Prof. Nana explained that one of the forms of support provided by Unram is to provide facilities to PUSBISINDO NTB to organize training for students, young lecturers, and academic staff.
“We provide space and time for PUSBISINDO NTB to conduct counseling and training for the academic community. This is necessary to improve understanding and skills in communicating with people with disabilities,” she added.
The training will take place in three levels with the aim of equipping participants with better sign language skills. “This training focuses on three levels so that the Unram academic community is able to understand the various skills needed to communicate with people with disabilities, especially in sign language,” explained Prof. Nana.
With this training, Unram is more mature in providing inclusive public services for people with disabilities. “The addition of new capabilities for the Unram academic community through this training makes Unram very well prepared to provide better services to people with disabilities,” she said.
The training program is scheduled to begin in April, with a target of 15 participants. Registration will begin in the same month, while the training will take place in May with a schedule of two meetings a week in the evenings. The training location will take place at Unram’s Mandarin Center.
Participants who take part in this training are charged Rp350,000 for a 3.5-month program that includes three levels of learning. In NTB there are only four institutions that have been licensed to organize sign language training, including PUSBISINDO NTB.
With this program, it is hoped that the Unram academic community can better understand and support people with disabilities in various aspects of academic and social life.
